The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has threatened to call a national strike if the current N617 per liter pump price of gasoline is increased further.
The price of Premium Motor Spirit, more commonly known as gasoline, would increase to between N680 and N720 per litre in the upcoming weeks, according to oil marketers, should the dollar continue to fluctuate between N910 and N950 on the black market.
The marketers also said that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Importers and Exporters’ official window for foreign exchange had continued to be unreliable and unable to supply the $25 million to $30 million needed for dealers to import PMS.
They also suggested that their members were being forced to postpone their plans to import gasoline due to a lack of foreign currency.
The NLC President, Joe Ajaero, said the union will move forward with a complete, all-encompassing, and indefinite nationwide shutdown of the country on Monday at a meeting of the African Trade Union Alliance in Abuja.
Additionally, Ajaero warned the federal government against undermining the union’s demands and the plan to give workers and Nigerians palliative care.
