- A viral video of church members flogging the ground in the rain during a deliverance session has sparked mixed reactions online, with many Nigerians criticizing the practice while others debate its spiritual significance

A viral video showing members of a church flogging the ground outside their place of worship during a deliverance session has sparked widespread reactions on social media.
According to reports, the pastor instructed congregants to come to church with canes and later directed them to move outside into the rain to carry out the exercise. The act was described as a symbolic way of confronting spiritual enemies.
In the footage, worshippers were seen standing under heavy rainfall while repeatedly striking the ground with their canes.
The unusual scene has since triggered mixed reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing concern, criticism, and disbelief over the practice.
One user, Chief & Queen, wrote: “Some of the things people do in the name of faith are pure madness. Faith shouldn’t be about stunts or public drama, it’s supposed to uplift, not leave people soaked and confused for goodness sake.”
Another commenter, Musa Adekunle, highlighted possible health and psychological concerns:
“Standing in the rain for long periods can increase the risk of infections like cold, flu and in some cases worsen conditions like pneumonia, especially for vulnerable people.
Repeatedly striking the ground with force can also lead to physical strain, muscle injury or joint pain, especially for older members.
There is also a mental health angle. When people are led to believe they are constantly ‘fighting enemies,’ it can increase anxiety, fear and psychological stress over time.
If safety and wellbeing are not considered, such activities can do more harm than good.”
Reacting further, Big Chris questioned the relevance of such practices: “Jesus!!!!! So this thing still happens in 2026?? When will some people wake up from this madness. The rule of life is simple, if you don’t hustle, you’ll never be successful. If you like pray and sweep the entire redemption camp, you’ll just remain the same!”
Another user, Idfwsm, wrote: “People Wey suppose gather use the cane flog the pastor wey give them this kind work inside rain. Religious psychosis is a disease mehn.”
Fujiverse added: “Sometimes I wonder what happened to our own will of thinking because this flogging the ground doesn’t change anything in your life you just wasted your money and your time doing nothing.”
