Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed that his next meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump take place in Moscow, following their high-stakes summit in Alaska, which ended Friday without securing a ceasefire in the Ukraine war.
As the two leaders wrapped up their remarks at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Trump thanked Putin and remarked that they would “probably” meet again soon.
Putin, switching briefly to English, replied: “Next time in Moscow.”
Trump, smiling, acknowledged the potential controversy of such a visit. “Oh, that’s an interesting one. I’ll get a little heat on that one, but I could see it possibly happening,” he said.
Both leaders left Anchorage shortly after the summit — Putin departed by plane after visiting the Fort Richardson Memorial Cemetery to honor Soviet soldiers, while Trump boarded Air Force One for the six-hour flight back to Washington.
The Alaska summit had been billed as a chance to press for an end to Russia’s war on Ukraine. Before the talks, Trump warned of “severe consequences” if Putin refused to halt the conflict. However, during his post-summit remarks, he announced no new measures or threats.
Trump also offered no clarity on when a potential follow-up meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy might occur, though he assured Putin: “We’ll speak to you very soon, and probably see you again very soon.”
