- Nigerian Islamic cleric and counselor Bello Muhammed Tahir has criticized Muslim first wives who view potential second wives as “husband snatchers,” stating this mindset is disgusting and unacceptable.
- On July 21, he clarified on Facebook that being a man’s first wife does not imply ownership of the husband.

Nigerian Islamic cleric and counselor, Bello Muhammed Tahir, popularly known as BMT, has criticized the mindset of some Muslim first wives who view potential second wives as “husband snatchers.”
In a Facebook post shared on Monday, July 21, BMT described the attitude as “disgusting” and “unacceptable,” urging Muslim women to stop behaving as though they own their husbands.
He emphasized that being the first wife in a polygamous marriage does not give a woman sole ownership over her spouse, noting that Islam permits a man to marry more than one wife.
Tahir further argued that even Christian women no longer hold such views about marriage, suggesting that Muslim women who do so are acting out of ignorance and misplaced entitlement.
He wrote …
“It is sickening and very unpalatable how Muslim first wives thinks that a potential second wife is a husband snatcher
From where did you get this unGodly conception?
How does being the first wife make the man your property that any other woman can’t be interested in him?
Just how? To say that this is coming from Muslims is dissatisfying.
Even Christians don’t think this way anymore.
I hope Allāh doesn’t test you one day where the table turns and you have to be at the mercy of another.
Some of us really need to be guided and learn how to conduct ourselves. Allahumma.”
His comments have sparked debate online, with many reacting to his bold take on polygamy and the dynamics of marital roles in Islam.
