A Nigerian model has issued a warning to others after falling victim to a scam involving a fake modelling gig that resulted in the theft of her phone and money.
The model took to TikTok to recount her ordeal, explaining that she was approached by someone claiming to be interested in booking her for a modelling assignment. The connection was made through a friend, who told her a supposed client was looking for a model.
Trusting the recommendation, she agreed to meet with the man. He took her around various shops in preparation for the so-called project getting her makeup done and taking pictures to “prepare” for the job.
However, while she was getting her makeup done, the man claimed his phone battery had died and asked to borrow hers to return an urgent call. After she handed over her phone, he stepped outside, supposedly to make the call, and vanished.
“He collected my phone to call someone back, stepped outside, and never came back,” she recounted.
Later, she discovered that the scammer had accessed her accounts and stolen money from her. Even more shocking was the revelation that the same individual had earlier defrauded her friend using a similar tactic. He had reportedly used the friend’s stolen phone to lure her into the trap.
The incident has sparked widespread concern on social media, with users urging freelancers, especially those in creative industries, to thoroughly verify any job offers and avoid meeting unknown individuals without proper vetting.
