Dr. Doyin Abiola, trailblazing Nigerian journalist and widow of MKO Abiola, has died at 82.
Her death was confirmed by Jamiu Abiola, MKO’s son, who said she passed away on Tuesday night.
Doyin Abiola was the first Nigerian woman to become Editor-in-Chief of a national newspaper. She led National Concord as Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief, expanding its influence and championing journalistic integrity.
Born in 1943, she earned a degree from the University of Ibadan and later a PhD in Communications and Political Science from New York University. Her career spanned Daily Sketch, Daily Times, and Concord, where she rose through merit and rejected gender-based editorial roles.
Despite challenges during General Abacha’s regime, she remained committed to media freedom. She also chaired several journalism award panels and won the DAME Lifetime Achievement Award.
