Version 1: Musa Mukanga, a man from Kenya, has been handed a life sentence for simply accepting a second-hand phone from a friend.
The whole ordeal began on September 2nd, 2013, when Musa’s friend entrusted him with the mobile device. Little did Musa know that this innocent act would lead to such dire consequences. Trusting his friend’s intentions, he inserted his SIM card and entered his PIN, only to have the phone abruptly shut down due to low battery.
In search of a solution, Musa took the phone to his sister’s hotel to charge it, retrieving it the next morning before heading to work. However, when he tried to unlock the device, he realized he didn’t have the necessary password, rendering it completely inaccessible.
Desperate to resolve the issue, Musa entrusted the phone to his sister, instructing her to return it to his friend, Ng’ang’a, when he arrived. Little did he know that this decision would lead to his downfall.
Tragically, a week later, law enforcement officers confronted Musa, promptly arresting him and demanding an explanation for the phone in his possession. Confused and unaware of the severity of the situation, Musa innocently shared the circumstances surrounding the phone, unknowingly implicating himself and his friend.
As a result, both Musa and Ng’ang’a were taken into custody. Heartbreakingly, Ng’ang’a admitted during interrogation to providing Musa with the controversial phone. Despite Musa’s pleas of innocence and his complete lack of knowledge about the phone’s questionable origins, the justice system remained steadfast, sentencing him to death, which was later commuted to a life sentence.
