The Oyo State Government has significantly increased the number of teachers in its public secondary schools, growing the workforce from 13,730 in 2019 to 26,436 by mid-2025 — nearly doubling within six years.

This development was revealed by the Chairperson of the Oyo State Post Primary Schools’ Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Mrs. Olubukola Oladipo, during the Omituntun 2.0 Inter-Ministerial Briefing held at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan.

A statement by Sulaimon Olanrewaju, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media, noted that 10,500 teaching and non-teaching personnel were hired during Governor Seyi Makinde’s second term alone.

To strengthen educational oversight, the number of Educational Zones in the state increased from six to ten. The new zones include Ibadan I to IV, Oyo, Ogbomoso, Kishi, Saki, Eruwa, and Iseyin.

Additionally, TESCOM established a Directorate of Pension and Post Services to better support retirees. Between 2017 and 2024, eligible staff underwent regular promotion exercises, and 7,500 teachers alongside 3,000 non-teaching staff were recruited between 2024 and early 2025 to improve academic outcomes.

Oladipo noted that the employment drive not only boosts education but also provides jobs for youth and enhances workers’ livelihoods. Other initiatives include continued disbursement of running grants to 695 public secondary schools, vehicle loan support for staff, and the introduction of an electronic car loan system to replace cheque collections.

Plans are also underway to train all 695 secondary school principals in contemporary school leadership practices.
