Liverpool have confirmed that Diogo Jota’s family will receive the full £14.5m left on his contract after the striker’s death in a car accident in July. The 27-year-old died alongside his brother, leaving behind his wife and three children.

Manager Arne Slot praised Fenway Sports Group for honouring the deal, saying: “Maybe people think it’s normal, but it is not in football.” Chairman Tom Werner added that Jota was “beloved” for his kindness, not just his goals.

Jota’s No. 20 shirt has been retired, while Chelsea players also donated part of their Club World Cup bonus to his family. The Portuguese forward scored 55 goals in 175 games for Liverpool after joining from Wolves in 2020.
