Nigerian singer Reekado Banks has shared the key lessons he learned after parting ways with Mavin Records in 2018, describing the decision as a major turning point in both his career and personal life.
During a recent appearance on The Esther Show, which began trending on Friday, Reekado revealed that leaving Don Jazzy’s renowned label pushed him into a phase of rapid growth, where he had to learn hard truths about accountability and independence.
Reflecting on his journey, he said, “I do not think I would have gathered as much knowledge as I have now.”
He explained that continued time at Mavin might have made him too comfortable and less responsible for his own outcomes. “Yeah, because I would be absolutely catered to and, you know, I would feel entitled. You know I would feel entitled to certain successes, certain. I feel like I would not take the blame for my failures. I would blame it on the label,” he admitted.
“So now, I have absolute knowledge of what it takes. I have absolute knowledge of what they did for me. I do appreciate the label. But back then, you feel like maybe you probably wouldn’t have.”
Reekado, who spent four years delivering hits under Mavin Records, further shared that becoming independent offered him a clearer perspective on how the music industry works and deepened his appreciation for the label’s previous support.
“If I stayed much longer, it would be like, I’m under the biggest label, so whatever little thing I do should count. But now I know what I am, I know exactly what I am doing,” he added.
