  • The Labour Party has dismissed the notion of granting Peter Obi an automatic presidential ticket for the 2027 elections.
  • According to National Publicity Secretary Obiora Ifoh, all aspirants including Obi must go through a transparent and democratically conducted primary.
  • Ifoh noted that Obi has maintained distance from the party’s current leadership for nearly a year, leaving his political direction uncertain

The Labour Party (LP) has stated clearly that its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, will not receive an automatic ticket if he decides to contest in the 2027 general elections.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, reaffirmed this position during an interview, amid growing uncertainty over Obi’s political direction and rising tensions with the Julius Abure–led leadership.

Ifoh emphasized the LP’s commitment to internal democracy, stressing that rules will not be compromised for any aspirant.

“The Labour Party has constantly said that the issue of tickets will be determined at the party’s convention. The NEC has spoken concerning our presidential candidacy. Every candidate must emerge through a democratically convened convention. There is no automatic ticket for anyone, whether for presidential, governorship, or chairmanship aspirants,” he said.

Ifoh revealed that Peter Obi has kept his distance from the current party leadership for about a year, leaving his future political plans unclear.

“Obi’s position in the Labour Party can only be answered by him. Nobody can speak for him. Whether he is in the ADC or Labour Party, he is the only one that can answer that question,” he added.

Despite the tension, Ifoh noted that the Labour Party remains open to reconciliation with Obi, but stressed that reconciliation does not override the rules guiding the party’s primaries..“I Don’t See Davido as Competition”: Peruzzi Claims He Wrote All Davido’s Songs
