- The accusation comes ahead of the LP’s upcoming congresses.
- Tony Akeni, the LP’s Interim National Publicity Secretary, claims to have gathered intelligence indicating APC’s plans.

The Labour Party (LP) has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of plotting to penetrate and seize control of its internal structures ahead of its upcoming congresses.
According to the party’s Interim National Publicity Secretary, Tony Akeni, intelligence gathered from across the country suggests that the APC is allegedly deploying loyalists into the LP to compromise its ward, local government, state, zonal, and national congresses.
“We have uncovered a sinister move by the APC to infiltrate our party at every level with the intention of derailing our congresses,” Akeni told Vanguard.
He further alleged that if such infiltration fails, the APC still intends to force its way into the LP’s leadership, continuing an agenda that began when, according to him, the ruling party tried to use the party’s former National Chairman, Julius Abure, to cause distractions.
Akeni also questioned the impartiality of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), accusing it of favoring the APC. He cited alleged irregularities during recent by-elections held in 16 states and flagged the ongoing voter registration process as another area of concern.
“Our country cannot afford a return to the days when fictitious names like American boxer Mike Tyson, late pop star Michael Jackson, and Lionel Richie appeared on the voters’ register,” he cautioned, urging Nigerians to remain alert.
The spokesperson further expressed worry about the future credibility of the commission after the tenure of its current chairman ends later this year.
“We only hope that whoever succeeds the current INEC chairman after his term expires in November or December will not erode the trust Nigerians still have in the electoral process,” he added.
