Kenneth Okonkwo Urges INEC to Hold All 2027 Elections on Same Day

  • Kenneth Okonkwo has called on INEC to hold all 2027 elections on the same day, citing financial, logistical, and security challenges with the current staggered schedule.
  • He warned that voter apathy could result and said consolidating the elections could cut the ₦873 billion budget almost in half.

Veteran Nollywood actor and politician Kenneth Okonkwo has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to reschedule Nigeria’s 2027 general elections to hold on a single day.

Okonkwo expressed disappointment that INEC scheduled the Presidential and National Assembly elections for February 20, 2027, while the Governorship and State Assembly elections are set for March 6, 2027. He argued that the staggered elections would impose heavy financial, logistical, and security burdens on the country.

He wrote:
“I am very disappointed in INEC for not scheduling all the elections to hold the same day. There’s nothing in the law that forbids it from doing that. Nigeria doesn’t have huge financial resources to accommodate the humongous logistics involved in having elections in two different days within two weeks. Nigerians would find it difficult to return back to vote again two weeks after voting the first time because of security and economic challenges… Voter apathy will result if this is not done.”

Okonkwo, an African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain, further suggested that combining all elections into a single day could cut the projected ₦873 billion election budget almost in half.

INEC had released the timetable on February 13, 2026, confirming the two separate election days for 2027, sparking concerns from stakeholders like Okonkwo over potential financial and logistical strains.

In other news…. Nigerian LGBTQ+ rights activist Bisi Alimi has criticized reality TV star Pere Egbi over his recent comments about the LGBTQ+ community.

The controversy began after Pere reacted to a post on X by a US-based pastor who argued that being LGBTQ+ is not a sin and that the Bible does not explicitly describe it as such. The cleric also stated that individuals cannot repent from a sexual orientation because it is not something a person chooses.

Responding to the pastor’s post, Pere maintained that being queer is a sin like other sins mentioned in the Bible. He further argued that God did not create a man for another man or a woman for another woman.

Bisi Alimi, however, disagreed strongly with Pere’s position. Taking to his Instagram page, the activist described Pere’s remarks as misguided and urged him to stop exhibiting what he termed “stupidity” in public.

According to Alimi, if homosexuality were considered a sin of the highest order, it would have been included among the Ten Commandments.
