Hollywood actress Lupita Nyong’o has revealed she has been battling uterine fibroids since 2014. The award-winning star made the disclosure on Tuesday, July 16, while marking Fibroid Awareness Month with a heartfelt message on Instagram.

Lupita, who rose to fame after winning an Oscar for 12 Years a Slave, said she had surgery in 2014 to remove 30 fibroids from her uterus. According to her, the doctor had warned her that the fibroids would likely return — and they did.

She explained that the condition, which affects millions of women globally, is often swept under the rug, especially among Black women. The actress said she’s tired of the silence surrounding women’s pain and called for more open conversations, better healthcare access, and improved treatments.

In her words, “We are told that periods mean pain and that pain is part of being a woman. But the truth is many of us are suffering in silence.”

Lupita has now teamed up with the Foundation for Women’s Health to launch a research grant aimed at developing less invasive treatment options. She also revealed her support for a bill in the U.S. Congress that seeks more funding for fibroid research and public awareness.

Her emotional post has sparked a wave of reactions online, with many women — especially across Africa
