Nigerian photographer Fati Abubakar has spoken out against a troubling trend she has observed among some men.
In a recent post, Abubakar pointed out that certain men resort to age-shaming women after being turned down romantically. She emphasized that growing older is a natural and beautiful part of life that everyone will experience.
Abubakar also addressed the misconception that wealth alone qualifies someone to be a good partner. She urged men to understand that being financially successful doesn’t automatically mean they are right for a relationship.
“It’s strange how when you reject men, they start calling old simply because you are in your 30s. They are consistently hurling insults and bitterness. I don’t understand the age shaming.
“And what’s wrong with aging? All of us will grow old. Being older is something beautiful to me. You are wiser, buoyant, happier, secure with your self. You make informed decisions. You can see through the BS. You can tell when someone is a narcissist or manipulative. (This wisdom may have skipped them but it hasn’t others)
And I truly hope men begin to understand that simply because you are rich or have a house or a car means you are husband material.
I truly hope you heal, and also understand that no matter how much of a spec you are, you may never be somebody’s cup of tea.
I hope you seek Islamic counseling to better understand the rights of men and women in marriage before you take the plunge.” She wrote in a Facebook post on Monday.
