Social media commentator Daniel Regha has publicly criticised Nigerian singer Simisola Kosoko, popularly known as Simi, over her recent explanation of controversial posts she made in 2012.
The backlash followed Simi’s clarification that the resurfaced tweets which reappeared amid her advocacy against sexual assault were simply playful expressions of affection toward children.
In the old posts, the singer had written about hugging and cuddling children she found adorable, including a four-year-old boy. While she described the remarks as harmless at the time, some social media users interpreted them as inappropriate after they resurfaced.
Responding to the criticism, Simi stated that her words were intended to convey innocent admiration for children’s cuteness and not anything improper.
However, Regha rejected her explanation, arguing that she appeared to be minimizing the seriousness of the concerns raised. He maintained that rather than portraying the comments as harmless affection, the singer should have accepted full responsibility.
According to him, framing the statements as playful expressions of love for children was misleading, and he described the conduct referenced in the old posts as inappropriate.
“Simi could’ve easily owned up to her mistakes and taken serious accountability but instead tried to downplay the whole thing with the ‘I adore children’ card. What she did was p£rversion, there’s no two way around it, point blank period.”
Regha also faulted Simisola Kosoko over her remark that she deleted the old tweets out of consideration for her family.
He questioned the logic behind describing the posts as sensitive enough to remove, while at the same time insisting they were completely innocent. According to him, if the statements were truly harmless, there would have been no reason to take them down on the grounds of family sensitivity.
“How dare you, Simi? If it wasn’t a problem and despicable act, it wouldn’t be sensitive for her family. Now that she’s a mother, let her switch the table and see how disturbing that act was. What an utterly stupid statement to put out.”
