“Is It Because She’s A Woman?”- Speed Darlington Challenges NAPTIP Over Simi Case

  • Nigerian singer Speed Darlington, also known as Akpi, has expressed concerns about NAPTIP’s handling of allegations against singer Simi.
  • NAPTIP issued a statement on February 24, indicating its willingness to investigate credible claims regarding Simi.
  • The investigation is prompted by calls from some Nigerians related to Simi’s old social media posts from over ten years ago, linked to her time at her mother’s daycare.

Nigerian singer Speed Darlington, widely known as Akpi, has voiced his concerns over how the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) is addressing allegations connected to fellow singer Simi.

Earlier on Tuesday, February 24, NAPTIP issued a statement affirming its readiness to examine credible claims after some Nigerians called for an investigation into Simi over old social media posts allegedly made more than ten years ago during her time working at her mother’s daycare. The agency encouraged anyone with reliable information or evidence to submit it confidentially through its official communication channels.

Reacting to the development, Speed Darlington took to his X page to express dissatisfaction with the agency’s approach. In a series of posts, he questioned whether gender could be influencing how the matter is being handled.

“NAPTIP, is it because she is a woman?” he wrote.

The rapper also compared the situation to his own experience in 2025, when he claimed authorities declared him wanted over what he described as a similar issue. According to him, the response in his case was more immediate and public.

Expanding his argument beyond the specific incident, Speed Darlington suggested that societal perceptions of crime often differ along gender lines. He pointed out that terms commonly associated with criminal activity such as “kingpin,” “drug lord,” and “cartel boss”are typically masculine, even though women can be involved in similar offenses.

He further argued that when women face allegations, public reactions sometimes lean more toward empathy.

“When a woman commits a crime, the narrative often shifts to sympathy. Why the double standard?” he questioned.

@Frankiekush47:”I remember how they were having a hard-on for you the other time over mere joke. They’ve gone into full mute mode now. Nigeria institutions with their double standard.”
