“INEC Should Be Fully Independent”- Man Questions President’s Role in INEC Appointment

  • A Nigerian man has stirred debate after criticising the president’s role in appointing the INEC chairman, calling for greater independence of the electoral body.
  • He further stated that the electoral body should operate with a fully independent governing structure, free from executive influence.

A Nigerian man has sparked conversation online after raising concerns about the independence of the country’s electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In a video making the rounds on social media, the man criticised the process of appointing the commission’s leadership, arguing that the involvement of the president could compromise neutrality.

“The fact that the President of this nation has to reappoint a new INEC chairman is a problem for everybody. INEC is an independent entity and the president can be biased as a human being and do something that favors him,” he said.

He further stated that the electoral body should operate with a fully independent governing structure, free from executive influence.

“INEC is supposed to have a governing body of its own. The president should not be in complete control of every institution just like the USA,” he added.

His remarks have since generated mixed reactions online
