A Nigerian lady has shared a heartbreaking account of what she says happened to her during her time at a boarding school in Enugu State an experience she claims left her unable to have children years later.
The lady, who chose to remain anonymous, said she attended a popular boarding school in the state. After her first year, she began begging her parents to move her elsewhere because of troubling influences around her.
“That incident repeated a few more times, and that was how life continued. I joined them and we started running things together. The time I went home, I wanted to tell my mom about it to change the school.
“My mom refused. I told my daddy about it, my daddy accepted, but my mom refused and it got to a point that my mommy and daddy had to fight over it. My mommy told my daddy that this is not how to train a child. They sent me back again,” she said.
According to her, some senior girls invited her to join their circle, promising friendship and protection. Believing it was harmless, she agreed but soon realized the group was involved in dangerous activities.
She recalled being pressured to attend a night party where she was given a drink.
“I didn’t know what happened, but the only thing I could remember was that they gave me a drink and forced me to take it,” she said.
“When I woke up, I was bleeding heavily. I didn’t know what happened to me. The girls told me it was my period, but I had never experienced anything like it. I got up, tried to move and I felt a very sharp pain.”
She said the abuse continued, as she was allegedly coerced into more encounters while trying to fit in.
Eventually, she became pregnant while still in school and was advised to end the pregnancy through unsafe means. The decision, she said, led to severe complications.
“I started having a foul smell. So I told them about it and they said they were going to buy some drugs for me, which they did. When they brought the drugs, I took some of them and the pain did not stop. At this time, water was coming out from my body, from my private area, and the water was smelling so bad.
“I told them I wanted to go to the hospital. They told me it’s not possible. I started having fever in school. That was how they called my mom to come and carry me from school. I didn’t even know what to tell them what happened to me.”
She said her mother later took her to the hospital, where she was examined privately.
“The doctor excused my mom to attend to me, to examine me. He asked me what I did. I didn’t tell him, but he told me that whatever I did, I have to speak up for him to help me. I begged him not to tell my mom about it and he accepted.
“That was how the doctor treated me. I got some medications. I went for a scan. I was treated. He concealed everything, and after I got better.”
Years later, she said doctors discovered damage to her womb a condition she believes resulted from the trauma and unsafe procedure she endured.
“I’m still barren. I can’t have a child. This is 10 years later. All because my mom didn’t listen to me. All because my mother fought my daddy for accepting to change school.
“I just want my story to be out there. I just want people to be vigilant. If my mom had accepted to change my school or even gave me a listening ear, I would not be in this situation right now,” she stated.
