“I’m Not Competing with Davido or Wizkid” – MI Abaga Speaks on Staying True to Himself

Veteran Nigerian rapper Jude Lemfani Abaga, popularly known as MI Abaga, has made it clear that he’s not in competition with Afrobeats heavyweights like Davido or Wizkid.

In a recent interview, the 43-year-old rapper from Plateau State emphasized that he has carved his own unique path in the music industry and remains content with where he stands.

MI acknowledged the evolution of the music scene, particularly the increasing wealth and extravagant lifestyles of younger artistes. However, he noted that he has chosen to stay grounded and true to himself.

“I’m not Davido. I’m not Wizkid. They are in the red-hot moment. But I am MI and has MI lost something? I don’t see it,“ he said.

Reflecting on the industry’s financial shift, MI pointed out that luxury items like cars that now sell for ₦100–200 million were significantly cheaper in his prime.

“The cars they’re buying now for 100 to 200 million, in our time, we bought them for 20 million. I live in Nigeria in real life where people need money. I’m not buying a 50 million naira ticket to America when I have staff with real issues.”

Addressing rumors about his relationship with his brother and fellow rapper Jesse Jagz, MI stated that any personal disagreements between them are strictly family matters and have nothing to do with music.
