A Nigerian lady, Chimaka Uba, has sparked intense debate on social media after declaring that she will never change her surname for marriage.
In a now-viral video, Chimaka stated emphatically that keeping her surname is a non-negotiable condition in any serious relationship. According to her, she makes her stance clear to any man interested in dating her from the very beginning to avoid future misunderstandings.
She explained that while her future children may choose to bear their father’s name, she has no intention whatsoever of altering her own identity, stressing that her decision is final and not open to compromise.
Chimaka added that she would rather end a relationship than be pressured into changing her surname, revealing plans to formally include this condition in a prenuptial agreement to prevent future marital conflict.
In her words:
“Whenever I meet a guy, the first thing I tell them, a guy that I want to be serious with or I want to date, mind you, the first thing I tell him or that is showing interest in me is that, ah, my name will always be Chamaka Uba till I die. I’m not changing my surname for nobody. When we have, if we have kids, your kids can bear your name. I don’t bloody care. The kids, they have their own free will. To an extent, they have their own free will. But, I’m not gonna change my name for no man. Tia maka uba til I die. Deal or no deal. And now that you people are mentioning this prenup, bless I go put that for my prenup. So on no account should you disturb my head that I should change my surname. Because I’m not gonna change my surname. My surname is UBA. And that’s what it’s gonna be til I die. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. If you don’t want it, move. Famous. Get out of my sight. Ass.”
The video has since generated mixed reactions, with many praising her confidence and self-identity, while others questioned the stance within traditional marriage expectations
