“I Won’t Be Vice President to Anybody, I’m Running for President on ADC Ticket”- Amaechi

  • Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has firmly denied reports suggesting he might run as a Vice Presidential candidate in 2027, possibly alongside Atiku Abubakar.
  • The denial follows a suggestion by Atiku’s ally, Dele Momodu, who praised Amaechi’s past political influence.
  • Amaechi, through his aide, insisted that his ambition is solely to become the President of Nigeria on the platform of the ADC, and not to be a running mate to anyone.

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has officially denied reports suggesting he may run as a vice-presidential candidate alongside former Vice President Atiku Abubakar or join any joint presidential ticket in the 2027 general election.

The denial follows a suggestion by media entrepreneur Dele Momodu, a political ally of Atiku, who indicated that Atiku might consider Amaechi for the VP slot if Peter Obi declines. Momodu had praised Amaechi’s past political influence:

“A lot of people are underrating Amaechi. Amaechi single-handedly handed power to Buhari. Amaechi mobilised more than any other person for Buhari, even more than Tinubu. If Obi does not make up his mind or chooses to run alone, then I believe the mantle might fall on Rotimi Amaechi.”

Reacting through his media aide, David Iyofor, Amaechi insisted that his sole political ambition is the Presidency, adding that he believes it is the turn of Southern Nigeria to produce the next president. Amaechi, who defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) earlier this year, is seeking the party’s presidential nomination.

Iyofor’s statement firmly rejected the VP rumors:

”Amaechi is not seeking to be running mate to anybody. He does not intend to be a presidential running mate to anybody and will not. Amaechi is not aware of, and will not be part of any talk to be running mate to anybody. For emphasis, Amaechi is running to be President of Nigeria and not to be a running mate to anybody. Politicians are kindly advised to leave Amaechi’s name out of any discussion for presidential running mate.”
