“I Want To Shape Policy, Not Just Watch”- Olumide Oworu Explains Why He Entered Politics

  • Nollywood actor Olumide Oworu is entering politics to influence decision-making.
  • He expressed concern over the poor policies implemented by current policymakers.
  • Oworu believes these policies negatively affect ordinary citizens, including himself.

Nollywood actor Olumide Oworu has shared his reasons for stepping into the political arena.

In an interview with Naija FM Lagos, the 31-year-old actor explained that his move into politics stems from a desire to be part of the decision-making process. He emphasized that the current wave of policymakers often implement poor policies, which impact ordinary citizens like himself.

Oworu expressed concern over Nigeria’s gradual decline and stated that he wants to contribute to reversing the nation’s downward trajectory. He also pointed to the advancing age of many existing politicians as a motivating factor for his entry into politics.

“I decided to join politics because of how the country is going. I know how Nigeria was when I was younger, but now, things keep getting worse. And I want to start a family and raise my kids here.

“So, I have to make sure that I try my best to be among the policymakers because whatever policy that is being enacted, it would ultimately, affect me like every other common person.

“And also, most of the present crops of politicians are aging out and whatever policy they are making today, it is me and my friends who will be at the receiving end tomorrow,” he explained.

Oworu ran for a seat in the Lagos State House of Assembly, representing Surulere 1 constituency under the Labour Party in the 2023 elections. However, he was defeated by his fellow actor, Desmond Elliott.

Despite the loss, Oworu’s enthusiasm for politics has not wavered, and he remains committed to pursuing a role in public service.
