Grammy Award–winning Nigerian artiste Burna Boy has disclosed that he and late South African rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes had settled their long-standing dispute before the rapper’s untimely death.

The two musicians had a public fallout in 2019 after Burna Boy issued a threat toward AKA amid tensions linked to xenophobic sentiments. The rift reportedly escalated after AKA shared screenshots of abusive messages he claimed to have received from Nigerians following banter over an AFCON quarterfinal match, which many interpreted as encouraging anti-Nigerian hostility in South Africa.

However, Burna Boy recently revealed that the misunderstanding was resolved privately. He made this known while paying tribute to AKA on his birthday through a post on Instagram.

In the emotional message, Burna Boy lamented that despite reconciling through direct messages, they never had the opportunity to meet in person or bring their planned ideas and musical collaborations to life before AKA’s death.

“Happy birthday, Supa Mega,” Burna Boy wrote. “We fell out over nonsense, even though we settled it privately over Twitter DMs. Sadly, we never got the chance to link up and do what we were meant to do. That’s something I’ll always regret until we meet again. Rest in peace, Mega.”

AKA was tragically shot and killed by unknown assailants outside a restaurant in Durban on February 10, 2023. Investigations into his murder are still ongoing.
