Renowned Nigerian music video director Clarence Peters has shared that he forgave his father, legendary musician Shina Peters, long before they ever spoke about their issues. According to him, the decision came after he realised he had repeated all the mistakes his father made.
Speaking on a recent episode of the Afropolitan podcast, the 41-year-old filmmaker revealed that this moment of self-awareness and forgiveness in 2014/2015 marked the beginning of his adulthood.
“I made every single mistake my father made,” Clarence admitted. “I was just fortunate that time and technology prevented mine from being as disastrous as his. Once I realised that, I forgave him immediately, even before we talked. That was the start of my adulthood, and I’m still on that journey because adulthood never really ends.”
Clarence Peters is the son of Shina Peters and veteran Nollywood actress Clarion Chukwura. In the past, he disclosed that his mother initially considered aborting him but changed her mind, believing he was the reincarnation of her late father, who died when she was just 11.
During a conversation with media personality Chude in February 2025, Clarence reflected on his parents’ relationship, stating he once wished to judge his father for how he treated his mother but realised he wasn’t in the position to do so. He added that, although he tries not to emulate his father’s approach to relationships with women, “I’m not perfect.”
