South African rap star Nasty C has shared candid details about his past struggle with alcohol and the lifestyle changes he has made.
The “Send Me Away” crooner admitted that he once drank heavily whether he was in the studio, at a restaurant, or preparing for a show. He said alcohol became a daily habit until he decided to stop altogether.
According to the 28-year-old artist, one of his biggest motivations for quitting was the fear of aging prematurely. Nasty C noted that many South Africans believe frequent drinking can make a person look a decade older than their real age.
In a recent chat with British-Nigerian media host Madame Joyce, he explained, “I was addicted to alcohol. I used to drink every night studio sessions, performances, even casual outings. That was my routine, and I had to break free.”
“Also, my tolerance when it comes to alcohol was very high, too. When I drink alcohol with friends, I would be the last one to be intoxicated. And I feel it’s a bad thing because you never know when something is going wrong until it’s too late. I got off the vodka a little bit but I was drinking everything else. Whisky, cognac, tequila, rum I was drinking everything.
“I gave up alcohol because I don’t want to get a ‘phuza face.’ There’s a thing in South Africa we call a ‘phuza face’ when you age really quickly because you drink a lot of alcohol, when you start looking 10 years older than you actually are.”
