Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has taken a swipe at former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over a viral video showing him serving food at a social event.
Speaking on Tuesday during the commissioning of the New Edo Line Transport Service in Benin City, Wike described Obi’s gesture as a “drama meant to mislead Nigerians” into believing he is modest.
According to Wike, “A presidential hopeful shouldn’t be caught serving food at parties. Is that what he would do if he became president? Serve meals at events? And people clap and call that humility? That’s a mockery.”
He criticized the media and public for celebrating such acts, saying it distorts the essence of leadership.
“Why do you entertain such theatrics? People believe he’s being humble just because he says he flies commercial. What security protocol would allow that?” he questioned.
Wike also questioned Obi’s sincerity, suggesting the display was politically motivated. “Where was all this when he was a governor? Did he serve food back then? Now elections are nearing, and he’s back at it,” he added.
He also stood by Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo’s call for Obi to secure proper clearance before visiting the state. Okpebholo had previously warned of potential security threats linked to Obi’s visits, referencing an incident during a donation to a nursing school that allegedly led to the death of four people.
“If Obi wants to visit, he should notify the authorities. Nobody is stopping him, but his safety must be ensured,” Wike said. “People manipulate narratives with paid appearances on TV. That’s the reality of our politics.”
