How a Nigerian Woman Lost Her Child Because of Her Church Rigid Beliefs

A grieving mother has shared how her newborn died after complications worsened by her church’s ban on medical care.

Raised in a sect that forbade hospitals and medication, she followed its teachings throughout her pregnancy until her health declined.

Secretly seeking help, she was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia and rushed in for an emergency C-section, but her baby later died after a month in intensive care.

Now, blamed by her husband’s family, she says she is leaving the church she holds responsible for her loss.

She said:
“I lost my baby due to my church doctrine. The church which I attended, whose name I don’t want to mention, frown on anything medication. This is a church I was born into. We do not take medications because we believe that we can never be sick. We believe also that our body is for God and no mankind medications can have any effect on the body. We cannot be sick hence we don’t take any medication. When the sickness comes, we command it and it goes away. This is how I’ve lived all my life because that was the church my parents were going before they gave birth to me….”
