- Gehgeh sparked debate after claiming Hilda Baci’s record-breaking pot of jollof rice “exposed Nigeria as a poor and hungry country.”
- His remarks have stirred mixed reactions online, with some defending Baci’s achievement while others echoed his concerns about Nigeria’s global image.

Nigerian social commentator Gehgeh has sparked controversy with his remarks on chef Hilda Baci’s record-breaking feat of cooking the largest pot of Jollof rice.
Hilda, who rose to global fame after her Guinness World Record cook-a-thon in 2023, recently cooked an enormous pot of Jollof rice in Lagos to feed thousands. The event, which attracted massive crowds, was widely celebrated as a display of Nigerian culinary pride.
However, Gehgeh criticised the event, claiming it highlighted Nigeria’s struggles with poverty and hunger rather than showcasing progress.
According to him, the overwhelming turnout of people eager to get free food painted the country in a negative light before the world.
“Hilda Baci’s biggest pot of Jollof rice just exposed Nigeria as a poor and hungry country. Instead of celebrating, we should reflect on why so many people are desperate for food in the first place,” Gehgeh said.
His statement has since divided social media users. While some agree that the event underscores the hardship faced by many Nigerians amid rising food prices, others argue that it was meant to promote unity, culture, and tourism rather than serve as a political statement.
