A Nigerian man, Aliyu Jamilu, has mourned his close friend, Major Bashar Mohammed, a Nigerian military officer who was reportedly killed during a deadly terrorist ambush in Borno State.
The officer was among soldiers attacked by IS-aligned jihadists who ambushed a military patrol near Damasak, Borno State. According to AFP, at least nine Nigerian soldiers were killed in the attack, while more than a dozen others were initially declared missing. Eight soldiers reportedly made it back to base, while others, including their commander—a major—remained unaccounted for.
In a Facebook post shared on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, Jamilu confirmed that Major Mohammed’s body had been recovered after several days of being missing in action.
“Innalillahi wa inna Ilaihirraju’un! Rayuwa abun tsoro. Just woke to the sad news of the passing of my dear friend Major BA Mohammed who paid the supreme price in the defense of the motherland,” he wrote.
“His body was recovered after several days of being MIA at Damasak Borno State.
“May the Almighty forgive his shortcomings, expand his grave, grant him eternal rest, and comfort the family and loved ones he left behind.”
Reflecting on their last conversation, Jamilu added:
“To think that I spoke to him few days ago where he told me yana cikin bush and there was no network yet still managed to reached out to check up on me, says a lot about the kind of person he was. Allahu Akbar. RIP Bash, I will miss you.”
