The Enugu chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is in turmoil as Governor Peter Mbah prepares to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday.
APC Caretaker Chairman, Dr. Ben Nwoye, confirmed the move, saying Mbah’s defection would “end Enugu’s long years in opposition,” describing it as “a merger between transformation and renewed hope.”
He added that all 24 state lawmakers, 260 councillors, and several National Assembly members would join the governor in what he called “a historic political realignment” for the Southeast.
APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, hailed the move as a major breakthrough, urging Enugu leaders to “consolidate the momentum.” He said, “Our goal is to expand, to win, and to deliver overwhelming victory.”
Deputy National Chairman (South), Emma Eneukwu, said the defection shows “the Southeast has found its political voice again.”
However, the PDP accused the APC of using “intimidation and coercion” to lure members, with its spokesman, Debo Ologunagba, claiming the ruling party was “orchestrating defections through blackmail and pressure.”
In response, APC spokesman Felix Morka dismissed the claims, saying, “They are reaping from years of corruption and leadership failure.”
Meanwhile, in Benue, reports suggest Senator Gabriel Suswam and ex-NAFDAC boss Dr. Paul Orhii may also join the APC, as posters and banners flooded Makurdi on Friday.
