A Nigerian businessman, who has lived in Ghana since 2007, is facing a distressing situation after being served with an order to shut down his shop.
In a viral video, the market chairman was seen confronting him, insisting that he had failed to obey existing rules.
The trader, whose identity remains undisclosed, defended himself, stating that he holds all the necessary documents to run his business legally and has nothing to hide. He further explained that he has been operating in the same market for over 15 years and even maintains a cordial relationship with the chairman.
However, his pleas were rejected, and no exemption was granted.
Addressing reporters, the Ghanaian market chairman accused Nigerian traders of violating local laws that restrict foreigners from engaging in both wholesale and retail trade within the country.
“A lot of Nigerians have closed their shop; you’re not different from them. We called the Nigerians to meet with them concerning issues in the markets. We’re going to prosecute any Ghanaian fronting for a Nigerian. The problem is that they are invading the market by wholesaling at the same time, doing retailing in the market, we can’t compete. The GIPC law states that all foreigners should do supply/wholesaling, not retailing,” the market chairman emphasised.
