Belgian footballer Romelu Lukaku has made shocking claims about alleged extortion attempts surrounding his late father’s burial arrangements.
In a heartfelt statement shared online, Lukaku revealed that he and his brother, Jordan Lukaku, had planned to hold their father’s funeral in Europe. However, due to “certain decisions being made in Kinshasa,” the burial will now take place in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
According to the brothers, efforts to bring their father’s body back to Europe were frustrated by individuals who allegedly tried to exploit them financially.
“We tried everything to bring his corpse back to Europe, but we felt that we were being extorted by some people,” Lukaku wrote.
“It breaks our soul for us to not put our father to rest, but some people didn’t want it.”
The brothers expressed deep pain over the situation, saying they now understand why their father had distanced them from certain family members.
“We understand now why our dad used to keep us away from a lot of people. God bless your soul, Papa,” they added.
Their father passed away on September 28, and the family had initially scheduled the funeral for this Friday. Lukaku and his brother thanked fans and supporters for their messages, expressing gratitude during what they described as a deeply painful time.
“Thank you for all the messages. We appreciate it a lot,” the statement concluded.
The emotional post has sparked sympathy from fans and fellow athletes around the world, with many offering condolences and prayers for the Lukaku family.
