FG Reaffirms 16 as Minimum Age for Tertiary Institution Admission

Resit Results for 2025 UTME to Be Released on Wednesday – JAMB

The Federal Government has confirmed 16 years as the minimum age for admission into all Nigerian tertiary institutions.

Education Minister, Dr. Tunji Alausa, made the announcement during the 2025 JAMB Policy Meeting in Abuja, stressing that the age limit is compulsory to ensure students’ cognitive and academic readiness.

“This policy reflects a balance between cognitive maturity and academic preparedness. Sixteen years is non-negotiable,” he said.

Dr. Alausa warned that any institution admitting students outside JAMB’s CAPS platform would be sanctioned, and heads involved in admission fraud would face prosecution.

The 16-year age policy follows an earlier attempt to set the minimum at 18, but after stakeholder feedback in 2024, it was revised and officially adopted.
