The family of Aishatu Umar is demanding justice following her death after a Kano hospital allegedly left surgical scissors inside her body during an operation.

The incident was made public by Nafiu Muhammad, who identified the deceased as his sister-in-law. According to his account, Aishatu Umar passed away around 1:00 a.m. after months of severe pain and medical complications. She is survived by her husband and five children.

Aishatu, who lived in Kano, reportedly fell ill several months ago and underwent surgery at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre in September. Following the procedure, her condition did not improve. Instead, she allegedly suffered persistent and severe abdominal pain for four months.

Despite repeatedly returning to the hospital, her family said she was only given pain relief medications, with no comprehensive tests conducted until much later. It was only two days before her death that proper scans and medical tests were reportedly carried out, revealing that a pair of surgical scissors had been left inside her body during the September operation.

Efforts were said to be underway to perform corrective surgery to remove the object, but time ran out, and she passed away before the procedure could be done.

The family described the incident as a clear case of medical negligence and questioned how trained professionals could leave surgical instruments inside a patient. They warned that such alleged negligence damages public trust in healthcare workers and institutions.

They are now calling on the Kano State Government and relevant health regulatory authorities to urgently investigate the matter and take appropriate action. The family insists that accountability is necessary to prevent similar incidents and has demanded justice for Aishatu Umar.
