Fresh details have emerged surrounding the final hours of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, as shared by his close relatives and long-time confidant, Mamman Daura.
In an exclusive conversation with THISDAY, Daura Buhari’s nephew and close associate provided insight into what transpired in the days leading up to the former leader’s passing.
According to Daura, he visited Buhari on Saturday at the London clinic where he had been receiving treatment. He said Buhari was in good spirits and preparations were already being made for his discharge later in the week.
“There was no sign of distress,” Daura recounted, noting that the former president was even making plans for visitors and appeared stable.
Other family members who were present confirmed this version of events. They shared that Buhari’s condition didn’t give any immediate cause for concern, and hotel bills were being settled for those who had traveled to support him in London.
Tragically, everything changed the next day. On Sunday morning, while having breakfast, Buhari reportedly began to experience breathing difficulties. His condition deteriorated rapidly despite efforts by medical personnel to stabilize him.
He was pronounced dead around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.
THISDAY was told …
“We were together on Saturday talking and laughing and Buhari was in high spirits in the London Clinic where he was admitted. We talked about everything. He even had the plan to depart for Nigeria upon his discharge this week and made sure that arrangements were made to sort out the hotel bills of everybody who was in London on his behalf before departing.
“I left him about 9pm on Saturday in high spirits and promised to see him on Sunday afternoon. He was looking forward to his doctor’s visit on Sunday morning.. But around midday, he started having breathing challenges and doctors rushed to his side to try and manage it. But unfortunately, around 4.30 pm, he gave up the ghost.”
