The sudden death of Bamidele Akingboye, former Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate in the November 16, 2024 Ondo State election, has taken a controversial twist, with fresh allegations linking one of his wives to the tragedy.
Akingboye, aged 60, reportedly passed away last Wednesday at his residence in Victoria Garden City (VGC), Lagos.
In an official statement, his Personal Assistant and Media Adviser, Oyeniyi Iwakun, confirmed the politician’s demise, describing him as “a man of integrity, a philanthropist, and a visionary leader.” He added that burial arrangements would be announced soon.
Allegations of Domestic Violence
However, a report by SaharaReporters quoted a source who alleged that Akingboye’s death may not have been natural. According to the claims, his wife allegedly pushed him off a balcony, leading to fatal injuries. Disturbing images of his body circulating online appeared to show bruises and deep cuts on his head and neck.
His Career and Political Journey
Aside from politics, Akingboye was a well-known businessman. He served as the CEO of Benshore Maritime, Clog Oil Systems, and as President of WeAfrica Group. He was among the leading contenders in the 2024 Ondo governorship race, which was eventually won by APC’s Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
Police Probe and Public Outcry
Meanwhile, police authorities have confirmed that a discreet investigation is ongoing to establish the true cause of death. Civil society groups and rights activists have also called for transparency, urging security agencies to avoid any form of cover-up in handling the high-profile case.
