A Nigerian lady recently shared a touching story about how a severe asthma attack during her NYSC year unexpectedly sparked a lifelong connection.
The account, posted on Facebook by Buchi & Buchiress, quickly drew admiration and emotional responses from users.
She recounted that 14 years ago, she and her now-husband were both serving as youth corps members, traveling together from Onitsha to Gombe on Uchenna Motors. Until one night at their NYSC camp, they had never spoken.
After doing her laundry and going to bed, the cold northern weather triggered her very first asthma attack. By the next morning, she was struggling to breathe, prompting the camp officials to arrange an emergency transfer to FMC Gombe. The ambulance required the presence of a doctor, nurse, and pharmacist.
One corps member called her future husband, who immediately came to the ambulance, even though he had no prior knowledge of her condition. Recognizing it was an emergency, he rushed without hesitation.
At the hospital, he quietly stayed by her side, providing comfort without needing words. She recalled:
“…When I woke up, as my eyes fluttered open, my husband was standing by the foot of my bed. He held my feet, squeezed them gently, and asked… ‘Can you breathe well now?’ I nodded softly. He continued holding my feet, saying nothing else. In that vulnerable moment, even without knowing me, he offered warmth, care, and reassurance.”
By evening, she had improved and was discharged from FMC Gombe.
The couple returned to their NYSC camp, where their friendship gradually blossomed into love, eventually leading to marriage and three children.
“…That asthma survivor GOD keeps helping. From friends to lovers, to a happily married couple with three beautiful children. That asthma survivor GOD keeps helping,” she concluded.
