Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has officially announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a major political shift in the South-East region.
Governor Mbah made the announcement during a statewide broadcast on Tuesday, stating that his decision came after “deep reflection” and was motivated by a desire to align Enugu with the central government for greater developmental impact.
“Today, after a long reflection, we have made a decision to join the All Progressives Congress,” Mbah declared.
He expressed gratitude to the PDP for offering him the platform that brought him into public office but explained that his move was driven by the need to better serve the people of Enugu State.
“To the Peoples Democratic Party, which supported us through a demanding campaign and celebrated our victory, I express my heartfelt gratitude. Leadership often requires taking tough, even painful decisions in pursuit of greater goals. This is one of those moments,” he said.
Governor Mbah praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as “massive support” for Enugu State under his administration, expressing optimism that the defection would strengthen collaboration and open doors for more development opportunities.
He confirmed that his defection was not an isolated move, revealing that members of the Enugu State House of Assembly, local government chairmen, councillors, and other political appointees had also joined him in defecting to the APC.
Mbah’s exit from the PDP comes amid reports that Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri is also finalizing his defection to the ruling party. Earlier this year, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno had reportedly switched allegiance to the APC alongside their cabinet members and aides.
Political observers say Mbah’s move could further consolidate APC’s influence in the South-East, a region traditionally dominated by the PDP, and signal growing alignment with the Tinubu-led administration.
