French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, have initiated a defamation lawsuit against American conservative commentator Candace Owens in the Delaware Superior Court.
The legal action stems from Owens’ public remarks and social media content, where she allegedly spread false claims suggesting that Brigitte Macron was assigned male at birth. The Macrons argue that these statements were not only defamatory but were strategically used by Owens to boost engagement for her podcast and online platforms.
The lawsuit seeks unspecified financial damages and possibly other forms of redress such as content removal or a formal public apology.
Owens, however, responded to the suit by positioning it as an attack on her freedom of speech. She doubled down by referencing Brigitte Macron’s brother, Jean-Michel Trogneux, as part of what she claims is supporting evidence for her claims.
Legal experts say that if the court rules in favor of the French First Couple, Owens could be forced to pay fines, take down the offensive content, and issue a public apology.
The case is already sparking heated debate online, touching on issues of defamation, digital responsibility, and the limits of free expression in the internet age.
