Nigerian artist Omah Lay recently opened up about the dynamics of friendships and egos in the country’s music industry. He revealed during a guest appearance on the Nando Leaks podcast that he perceives himself as distinct and does not rely on validation from others, which influences how he engages with people.
He explained that he prefers keeping a tight-knit group of friends, surrounding himself only with those who truly resonate with his mindset and ambitions. According to him, he avoids large social circles, opting instead for meaningful connections with individuals who understand his perspective.
Omah Lay described himself as generally calm and easygoing but acknowledged that his strong sense of self can make forming new friendships challenging. He also noted that this tendency reflects a broader trend in Nigeria’s music scene, where pride and ego are common among artists and industry figures.
Despite recognizing how such traits might hinder growth, he stated that he consciously works to stay grounded to ensure they do not obstruct his progress.
He said: “I have a very weird personality, I believe I am just that guy, so I don’t have a lot of friends. I don’t talk to a lot of people, just very few people and those people are people who try to come into my world and understand where I am going.
“The Nigerian music scene is full of egos. I am a chill guy but I have too much ego. It is hard to make friends like that.”
