Public affairs commentator Dr. Charles Akpoti has criticized Nigerian general overseers for their silence amid the rising wave of violence and insecurity across the country.

In a strongly worded statement, Akpoti accused prominent church leaders of being compromised by political influence, claiming they have chosen comfort and connections over truth and conscience.

According to him, many pastors have become too politically entangled to speak against injustice, saying that “their mouths are filled with political meat.” He lamented that the church has drifted from its moral responsibility to stand with the oppressed and call out evil, regardless of who is in power.

Akpoti further stated that the Holy Spirit no longer moves in many Nigerian churches, alleging that pastors now allow “evil politicians to mount their pulpits and speak,” turning sacred spaces into platforms for propaganda.

His remarks have sparked reactions online, with some Nigerians agreeing that many religious leaders have gone silent on national issues, while others defended the clergy, saying they still contribute to peace and nation-building through prayer and charity.
