Nigerian athlete Chukwuebuka Enekwechi has etched his name in history as the first African to surpass the 22-meter mark in the men’s shot put event.
Competing at the Eugene Diamond League in the United States over the weekend, Enekwechi secured third place with a remarkable throw of 22.10 meters — eclipsing his previous personal best of 21.91m, which he also set at the same competition last year.
The event featured fierce competition, with Joe Kovacs taking the top spot thanks to a world-leading throw of 22.48m. Roger Steen narrowly beat Enekwechi for second place with a 22.11m throw on his fifth attempt.
Enekwechi made a final push with a 21.68m throw but couldn’t reclaim second place. Nonetheless, his stellar performance not only earned him a spot on the podium but also marked a groundbreaking moment for African athletics.
