- A Nigerian woman has drawn attention to Rwanda’s cleanliness after witnessing citizens actively cleaning their streets.
- Social media users reacted by praising Rwanda’s strict environmental policies and comparing them unfavourably with Nigeria.

A Nigerian woman has sparked online discussion after expressing surprise at seeing Rwandans actively cleaning and maintaining their streets during a visit to the East African country, reinforcing Rwanda’s reputation as Africa’s cleanest nation.
Although Rwanda does not always rank highest globally in environmental performance, it is widely regarded as the cleanest country in Africa, with cities like Kigali frequently cited as some of the continent’s neatest urban centres.
The country’s cleanliness is largely driven by Umuganda, a compulsory monthly community service exercise in which citizens between the ages of 18 and 65 take part in street cleaning and local maintenance. Rwanda also introduced a ban on non-biodegradable plastic bags in 2008, with strict penalties for littering.
In addition, Kigali and other cities observe Car-Free Days twice monthly to reduce pollution, while authorities closely monitor compliance with environmental regulations.
The woman’s observation triggered reactions on social media, with many users comparing Rwanda’s standards to Nigeria’s.
