Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari passed away on July 13, 2025, at The London Clinic, an exclusive private hospital in the UK known for treating high-profile individuals.

Buhari, who had travelled to London in April for a routine check-up, reportedly took a turn for the worse and was admitted to the intensive care unit, where daily costs can exceed £3,500. Despite signs of recovery and plans for discharge, he suffered sudden breathing complications and died around 4:30 p.m. His death was confirmed by his former spokesperson, Garba Shehu.

The London Clinic, located on Harley Street, is a luxury medical facility favoured by global elites, offering cutting-edge treatments, including robotic-assisted surgeries and advanced diagnostics. Its patient list includes politicians, royals, and dignitaries.

Buhari’s death has stirred renewed attention to the reliance of Nigeria’s top leaders on foreign hospitals, even as the country’s own healthcare system remains underfunded and overstretched.
