Ghana has suspended all boxing activities following the death of 32-year-old super-middleweight boxer Ernest “Bahubali” Akushey.

Akushey died on September 23, 2025, at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, 11 days after sustaining severe injuries during a fight at Bukom Boxing Arena.

The National Sports Authority (NSA), in consultation with the Ministry of Sports, said the suspension was to prioritise athlete safety, noting it was the second boxing-related death in six months after Nigeria’s Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju died in March.

The NSA also revealed plans for a five-year safety and development programme to improve medical and regulatory standards, overseen by a nine-member Interim Management Committee.

Authorities stressed that while the suspension disrupts events, it is a necessary step to protect lives and restore confidence in the sport.
