ASUU Suspends Nationwide Strike Following Payment of June Salaries by FG

  • The payment brings an end to weeks of unrest and the “no-pay-no-work” position taken by several ASUU chapters, following five months of unpaid wages.
  • In a statement on Tuesday, Minister of Education Tunji Alausa attributed the restored calm in tertiary institutions to continuous and effective dialogue with stakeholders.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has officially ended its nationwide strike.

This development comes after the Federal Government, on Tuesday, disbursed the long-overdue June 2025 salaries to lecturers and staff across Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.

The payment brings an end to weeks of unrest and the “no-pay-no-work” position taken by several ASUU chapters, following five months of unpaid wages.

The salary delays were reportedly linked to the transition of academic staff from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) to the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS), under the supervision of the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation.

According to Punch, ASUU’s branch chairman at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University in Bauchi, Haruna Angulu, confirmed that lecturers had resumed work following the crediting of their June salaries.

Likewise, the ASUU chapter at the Federal University of Kashere issued a memo instructing members to return to academic duties, citing the salary payment as the reason.

At the University of Jos, a circular from the bursary department confirmed the payment of outstanding wages, prompting lecturers to end their strike action.

In a statement on Tuesday, Minister of Education Tunji Alausa attributed the restored calm in tertiary institutions to continuous and effective dialogue with stakeholders.
