ASUU Strike: FG Moves to Enforce ‘No Work, No Pay’ Policy, Orders VCs to Submit Attendance Reports

  • The federal government has ordered vice-chancellors to conduct attendance checks and withhold salaries of staff joining the ASUU strike, which began October 13, 2025.
  • Academic activities were halted nationwide, while CONUA members continued lectures.
  • The NLC criticized the government’s threats, backing ASUU’s demands for unpaid salaries, funding, and implementation of past agreements.

The federal government has directed vice-chancellors of all federal universities to conduct physical attendance checks and submit staff reports following the nationwide strike by ASUU, which began on Monday, October 13, 2025.

In a circular signed by Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa, the government warned that salaries of striking staff would be withheld, while members of CONUA and NAMDA would continue to receive pay.

Academic activities have been suspended in several universities across the country, though some CONUA members continued lectures.

The NLC condemned the government’s “no work, no pay” stance, defending ASUU’s action as a reaction to years of unfulfilled agreements.

ASUU’s two-week warning strike demands the full implementation of the 2009 FGN–ASUU agreement, payment of arrears, and revitalization of public universities.
