Super Falcons septet Asisat Oshoala, Rasheedat Ajibade, Chiamaka Nnadozie, Tony Payne, Christy Ucheibe, Osinachi Ohale and Uchenna Kanu have been shortlisted for 2023 CAF Women’s Player of The Year award
Chiamaka Nnadozie, the goalkeeper for the Super Falcons, was also nominated for Goalkeeper of the Year in light of her outstanding play for both her club, Paris FC, and the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
On the official CAF website, cafonline.com, the preliminary nominees for the various women’s categories of the CAF Awards 2023 were revealed yesterday.
Thirty women from twelve different countries make up the Women’s Player of the Year list, with South Africa and Nigeria dominating the field with six players apiece.
Along with fellow citizens Deborah Abiodun and Oluwatosin Demehin, Falconets star Esther Ajakaye, who made her Super Falcons debut in the first leg of the 2024 Olympics qualifiers against Ethiopia, is a nominee for the Young Player of the Year award.
In the same way that Nigeria will compete against Burkina Faso, Burundi, Ghana, Malawi, Morocco, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, and Zambia for the National Team of the Year, Coach Randy Waldrum, who led the Super Falcons to the round of 16 in the 2023 FIFA Women World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, is also a candidate for Coach of the Year.
Asisat Oshoala, a striker for Barcelona, is the current winner of the highest prize, having earned it in 2022. It was her fifth CAF women’s player of the year gong and would be going for sixth crown.
