Angry Gen Z protesters in Nepal have set fire to the country’s parliament building following days of unrest over a controversial ban on social media platforms and mounting allegations of government corruption.
The protesters stormed the parliament complex in Kathmandu, overwhelming security and igniting the main building.
“Hundreds have breached the parliament area and torched the main building,” said Ekram Giri, spokesman for the Parliament Secretariat.
The unrest, which began on Monday, has already claimed at least 19 lives and left over 200 people injured. The mass demonstrations erupted after Nepal’s government imposed a ban on 26 major social media and messaging apps, a move that was lifted earlier today following the deadly clashes.
Thousands of young Nepalese, united under the banner of “Gen Z” protests, took to the streets not only against the social media restrictions but also to vent frustrations over widespread corruption and limited economic opportunities.
In the wake of the escalating violence, several ministers have reportedly resigned from office.
